India issued 1.5 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine – Covishield’s dispatch for Bhutan

The first batch of the Covid-19 vaccine Covishield having 1.5 lakh doses has been dispatched in a flight from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai in the early hours of Wednesday morning and will be reaching Thimpu.

Bhutan is the first country, to whom India has given the Covid-19 vaccines as a token of gift manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII). The batch of 1,50,000 vaccines of Covishield will be arriving in Thimpu on Wednesday revealed the sources.

With the special relationship between Bhutan and India, India assured Bhutan despite Covid-19 restrictions that there will be a continuous supply of trade and essential services to Bhutan.

So far, India has sent the necessary medicines and medical supplies which comprises of PPEs, paracetamol, hydroxychloroquine, N-95 masks, test kits and x-ray machinee for Bhutan which is estimated to be at a cost of more than Rs 2.8 crore. Moreover, India also has come into ‘Air Travel Arrangement’ or ‘Transport Bubble Agreement’ with Bhutan.

Time and again, India has tried its best to support Bhutan whether it is facilitating trade and transit amid Covid-19 or opening of a new trade route through Torsha Tea Garden (India) and Ahllay (Bhutan).

In a release on Tuesday, Ministry of External Affairs mentioned about the requests for the supply of vaccines and Bhutan is on the priority list.
