India records highest-ever single day surge in the Covid-19 cases with 1.31 L new infections

India is observing the highest spike of Covid-19 cases whilst breaking the earlier records for the third consecutive day in a row after recording a count of 1.31 lakh new cases on Friday and the fourth day to record over 1 lakh infections.

The country has registered as many as 1,31,968 fresh cases of Covid-19 infections over a span of the previous 24 hours, which has raised the overall caseload to 1,30,60,542, according to the reports given by Health Ministry. A death count of 780 has been reported due to Covid-19 over the last 24 hours raising the overall death count to 1,67,642.

As of now, the total number of active cases in the country account to 9,79,608. Around 61,899 people have been discharged on Thursday tallying the total number of recoveries in the country to 1,19,13,292.

On Thursday, another singly day spike was recorded with 1,26,789 fresh cases.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), on Thursday around 13,64,205 samples were tested for Covid-19 infection, raising the total sample testing count to 25,40,41,584.

As of now, a count of 9,43,34,262 people have been administered the vaccine against the deadly virus in the country.

The government initiated the vaccination process for above 45 years of age starting from April 2. India had commenced the vaccination drive on January 16, with the first phase targeting the healthcare workers after which frontline workers were chosen. The second phase was initiated on March 1 for senior citizens and people aged above 45 having co-morbidities.
