Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on World Toilet Day that India has already accomplished the United nations Sustainable Development Goal of having toilets in every household by 2030, being 11 years ahead in time for the target.
Gajendra Singh addressed the reporters right after a virtual meeting held which consisted of felicitating the “Swachhata Puraskar” for the top districts and states, appreciating the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has driven the accomplishments right ahead of the time.
While answering to the media, Shekhawat stated, “The United Nations announced as part of its sustainable development goals that there should be toilets in every house till 2030. I am happy that India achieved it in 2019, 11 years ahead of target, and that too when about 60 per cent of the world’s open defecators were here. We have achieved this despite the social stigma and taboo.”
The Jal Shakti Minister added, “This is all thanks to the Prime Minister’s communication skills, his leadership and his persuasion. The country stood together in this cause. In order to maintain the sustainability of this, we have to pursue ‘Open Defecation Free plus’ which will take sanitisation to the next level. Development is taking place in rural areas to properly dispose of solid and liquid waste.”
The World Toilet Day was commemorated on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the occasion, stated that India has observed unparalleled achievement with respect to providing hygienic toilets to the crores of population of the country.
Modi took to Twiiter to express his joy, “On World Toilet Day, India strengthens its resolve of #Toilet4All.
