Kerala will be administering the first dose for the vaccine against Covid-19 for everyone above 40 years of age by July 15, said Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday, further adding that the government is planning for a vigorous campaign to be launched to accomplish the target.
During the core – committee meeting over Covid-19, Vijayan said nearly 50 lakh people will be taking the vaccine from the above 40 age group and the state will procure around 38 lakh doses by the end of June, therefore the goal will be complete by mid-July.
Pinarayi Vijayan said, “Efforts are on at a war footing to contain the possible third wave in the state. We have started a detailed study on different mutations. We have to be more vigilant as there are reports that children may be infected during the third wave.” He added that all the departments should work together for meeting the threat of the upcoming third wave of Covid-19 pandemic.
On Saturday, Kerala has recorded 17,328 fresh cases of Covid-19 as a count of 250,000 samples were subjected to testing with a test positivity rate of 14.89 per cent. Kerala has been recording a TPR lower than 15 percent for the last couple of days. The active cases have declined to 1,67,638 with 24,000 recoveries reported on Saturday.
The maximum number of cases have been reported in Thiruvananthapuram with 2468 cases, followed by Malappuram with 1980 cases, Palakkad with 1899 cases. However, the death count is higher with 209 fatalities raising the total to 9719 from the beginning of the pandemic.
