The Karnataka High Court has directed the state government to create a grievance redress mechanism wherein people can complain about violation of Covid-19 protocols directly via the platforms of WhatsApp and Telegram.

A division bench led by Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka has issued the orders on Friday on a petition which has appealed for stringent abiding of the Covid-19 appropriate behavior which comprises of wearing a mask and social distancing.

The government revealed to the court about a grievance redress mechanism set up by releasing a notification dated June 2, 2021. The Court directed the state government to increase the publicity of the mechanism so the general masses become aware of the same. The order stated that it would quite better if the government could allow the complaints filed via the social media platforms of WhatsApp and Telegram to report the Covid-19 inappropriate behavior and the respective violations.

Alongside, Geeta Misra, a Bengaluru-based advocate, has lodged an application alleging the violations of the Covid-19 appropriate behavior by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, when he was reviewing the Kengeri metro line in May. The event had cabinet ministers R Ashoka, Basavaraj Bommai and V Sommana, as stated in the application and also referred to other violations in several public programmes by Minister M T B Nagaraj in Hoskote and also Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil in his constituency.

The bench instructed the applicants to file their complaints via the new grievance redress mechanism established by the government, saying it will aid in understanding the efficiency of the system just launched.

The upcoming hearing is scheduled for June 10.
