More than 8 million people have been vaccinated in the drive, reveals govt as the second phase commences today

Over 8 million people have been administered the vaccine in the Covid-19 vaccination drive initiated by the Centre which commenced on January 16 with the first phase, revealed an official from the Union Health and Family Welfare on Saturday as the second phase of the vaccination drive has commenced today.  The health ministry official iterated that the second dose vaccination will be initiated for the ones who had been vaccinated for 28 days post receiving the first dose. The health official revealed to news agency ANI, “Second dose vaccination started today for the beneficiaries who have completed 28 days after receiving the first dose of vaccine. Till 6pm today, a total of 80,52,454 vaccinations have been carried out.”

The health ministry iterated about no case of serious or severe side effects following immunisation (AEFI) which is connected to administration of the vaccine.

In a statement released priorly, the Health Ministry said the eight states who have had a vaccination count of over 400,000 are giving the 59.70 % of the total beneficiaries who received the vaccine. The statement said, “Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for 10.8% of the total beneficiaries in India. The number of beneficiaries being vaccinated every day has shown a consistent enhancement.”

The cumulative number of the Covid-19 cases in India accounts to 10,892,746 and the death toll amounts to 155,550. Presently, India has 136,571 active cases of Covid-19, which is a meagre 1.25% of the overall count of Covid-19 infections throughout the country. Over the last 24 hours, 12,143 fresh cases have been recorded, from which 86.01% have been from six states, according to the Ministry.

The Ministry said, “Six states account for 80.58% of the new deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties with 36 deaths. Kerala follows with 18 deaths, while Karnataka and Punjab reported 8 deaths each in the last 24 hours.”
