Myanmar appeals to Mizoram govt to handover eight cops who flew away from the country

Myanmar has appealed to Mizoram administration for sending back the eight police officials, who had crossed the northeastern state for seeking refuge, post the military coup which happened in February in Myanmar, revealed an official.

Mizoram and Myanmar share a 510 km border, where the masses are protesting against the one year emergency declared by the country’s armed forces.

As per Maria CT Zuali, Deputy Commissioner, Champai district, Myanmar’s Falam asked for the “handover of eight police personnel who fled the neighbouring country and entered India”.

On Saturday, Zuali revealed to PTI, “I have received a letter from the deputy commissioner of Falam district in Myanmar seeking the detainment and handover of eight police personnel to Naypyitaw as a friendly gesture.”

The letter iterated that eight police officials from Myanmar have left for India to escape.

The letter undersigned by Saw Htun Win, Falam district deputy commissioner said, “In order to uphold friendly relations between the two neighbouring countries, you are kindly requested to detain eight Myanmar police personnel who had arrived in Indian territories and handover to Myanmar.”

Mizoram’s home department official said that 16 people had crossed the border, from which eleven have claimed they are police personnel.

According to the sources from Assam Rifles, guarding the Mizoram-Myanmar border revealed that 35 Myanmarese have escaped so far.

The security has stepped up along the border to cease infiltration from Myanmar, said Assam Rifles DIG Brigadier Digvijay Singh.

Singh at Champhai said, “In order to uphold friendly relations between the two neighbouring countries, you are kindly requested to detain eight Myanmar police personnel who had arrived in Indian territories and handover to Myanmar.”
