New police case in Pakistan as anti-polio campaign sets back over COVID-19

Pakistan has recorded another case of Polio, tallying the total Polio cases in the country to 82, on Sunday. The case was registered in Balochistan, who has already recorded 24 additional cases of disability induced by Polio, according to Dawn.

In 2019, as many as 147 cases were registered in Pakistan, much higher, than 12 cases recorded in 2018. An official from the country’s National Institute of Health reveal the latest victim of Polio is a 10-month-old baby girl. The official said, “She is a resident of District Quetta, Tehsil Chilton Town and Union Council Kharootabad-II. Her left lower limb has been paralysed and the socioeconomic status of the family has been declared poor. It was a pure case of refusal as the family was against vaccination.”

The polio cases are arising at the time Pakistan is battling with the second wave of COVID-19. Starting from the first Coronavirus case in February end, with surge in cases, the door-to-door polio immunisation campaigns were placed on hold in March, which resumed on a very short scale in the month of July.

Presently, the two countries reporting cases of Polio disease are Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan continues to have polio linked travel restriction enforced by World Health Organization, with which every individual traveling from Pakistan from needs to have a polio vaccination certificate from 2014.
