PM Modi and Hasina launched Chilahati – Haldibari rail link together

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina together launched the Chilahati – Haldibari rail on Thursday, which will be the connecting link between the borders of the neighboring countries. Both the leaders also jointly inaugurated the Bangabandhu Bapu Digital Exhibition and put forth a commemorative stamp on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman amid the virtual ceremony of the summit between the two leaders.

While addressing the virtual summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, ” The message of Bangabandhu Sheikh is eternal for us and we also respect his leadership immensely. Bangabandhu’s legacy is visible in your (Hasina’s) deeds.”

Modi iterated about the feeling of immense pride as the digital exhibition is being launched of Mahatma Gandhi and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rehman adding that the two leaders will keep up the intent of inspiring the youth in both the countries.

Modi further added, “It is a matter of pride for me that I am getting to release a digital exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rehman. I hope that their legacy continues to inspire the youth of our country.”

The summit is conducted a day post Vijay Diwas, which marks India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the formation o Bangladesh. For a while now, India and Bangladesh have been attempting to enhance transport and connectivity. Both the sides are committed to revival and operations of the 6 pre-1965 rail links connecting India and Bangladesh. As the Haldibari Chilahati rail link was inaugurated, it makes 5 out of 6 rail links operational and functional.

The other four links which are operational between India and Bangladesh, which link West Bengal with Bangladesh are Petrapole (India) to Benapole (Bangladesh), Gede (India) to Darshana (Bangladesh), Singhabad (India) to Rohanpura (Bangladesh) and Radhikapur (India) to Birol (Bangladesh).

Originally, the Haldibari Chilahati rail link was comprising of the Broad-Gauge main route which connected Kolkata to Siliguri, but with the 1965 war, the rail link was disconnected. The intent is to revive the link and aid in establishing a smooth and easy connection for the people on both sides.

Bangladesh is commemorating 2020 as Mujib Borsho, which marks the birth centenary of father of Bangladesh as a nation who is Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, widely renowned as Bangabandhu.
