SC concludes the case against Italian marines blamed for killing fishermen off Kerala

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declared closure of all the case proceedings in India against the two Italian marines, who were accused of assassinating two fishermen off the Kerala coast in the year 2012.

Earlier, last week, the apex court had agreed to finish the proceedings in India against the two Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, after it was revealed that a compensation sum of Rs. 10 crore for the family members of the victims has been lodged in the registry of the Supreme Court. The bench led by Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice MR Shah added on Friday about its point of view that compensation amount to be directed directly to the Kerala court to ensure adequate monitoring of the disbursement.

India blamed the two marines on board the MV Enrica Lexie — an Italian flagged oil tanker – of taking the lives of two Indian fishermen present on the fishing vessel in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which happened in February 2012. The holder of the fishing boat ‘St Antony’, in which two Kerala fishermen were executed when the marines opened fire on them supposedly under the misconception that they were pirates, registered the complaint against the Italians.

The Centre revealed the Supreme Court in April 2021 that the families of the fishermen who were assassinated by Italian marines have been efficiently compensated and sought expeditious closure of proceedings in front of the apex court and a criminal trial was awaited prior to the special court in Delhi.
