Twitter on Monday answered the emerging controversies regarding the geo-tagging error, which displayed Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as a part of China amid the live broadcast by a senior journalist, stating the issue has been resolved. A Twitter spokesperson revealed it being a technical glitch, one which has been resolved swiftly.
In a live broadcast session of Nitin Gokhale from Leh’s Hall of Fame, Twitter’s geo-tagging feature showed that Jammu and Kashmir was a part of China. To which Gokhale wrote on Twitter, “Twitter folks, I just did a live from the Hall of Fame. Giving Hall of Fame as the location and guess what it is saying Jammu & Kashmir, Peoples Republic of China! Are you guys nuts?”
In the following tweet, Gokhale wrote to Twitter users about trying it , terming the incident outrageous, “Tweeple pl put Hall of Fame Leh as your location for live broadcast and see what’s happening. It shows location as Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Republic of China. I tested it again. Outrageous. Pl flood Twitter with complaints. GoI should take immediate action. @rsprasad”
Twitter was in hot mess with J&K displayed in People’s Republic of China.
Many of the users tried updating their feed with location tagged as Leh and found similar observations. Kanchan Gupta, fellow of the Observer Reserach Foundation stated, “So @Twitter has decided to reconfigure geography and declare Jammu & Kashmir as part of People’s Republic of #China . If this is not a violation of #India laws, what is? Citizens of India have been punished for far less. But US Big Tech is above the law? ”
A user tweeted with the screenshot of live broadcast and wrong location, “Am surprised by the line on the visual ..”
“Why it is showing J & k , People’s Republic of China?” another user tweeted.
The incident followed with numerous tweets tagging the official handles of Twitter and Twitter India urging for explanations with some tweets even mentioning government and concerned departments.
The incident happens at the time with on-going border disputes between India and China.
