TS Tirumurti, the Permanent Representative to the United Nations, declared on Wednesday made an announcement that India’s annual resolution regarding the subject of counter-terrorism was supported by more than 75 countries and thus adopted by majority in the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

Tirumurti tweeted, “India at the forefront of counter-terrorism. Delighted that the annual resolution tabled by India ‘Measures to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction’ was co-sponsored by more than 75 countries and adopted today by consensus in First Committee of UN General Assembly.”

India, who has always battled with state-sponsored cross-border terrorism, has always taken the lead in terms of portraying it as a serious threat that will hamper the international peace, security and harmony arising from procurement of weapons that will cause mass destruction invoked by terrorists.

India appealed for international co-operation which would refrain the terrorists from procuring weapons which would lead to mass destruction through its resolution “Measures to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction”.

The resolution was adopted by the UNGA.

India’s move to strengthen the national measures by presenting the issue at General Assembly even predates adopting resolution of 1540 through the Security Council, which makes it mandatory for all the states to step back from giving support by any means non-State actors from developing, acquiring, manufacturing, possessing, transferring, or also utilization of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and their mode of delivery.
