The US State Department has declared the restoration of discussions with Taliban right prior to the visit of US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalizabad to Kabul, Doha and several regional capitals to have a political settlement in Afghanistan.

In a statement on Sunday, the US State Department said, “Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalizabad and his team will travel to Kabul, Doha and additional regional capitals.”

The statement further added, “He (Khalozabad) will resume discussions on the way ahead with the Islamic Republic and Afghan leaders, Taliban representatives and regional countries whose interests are best served by the achievement of just and durable political settlement and permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.”

Post Joe Biden took over as the US President, Khalizabad will mark his first visit. According to the release, Khalizabad is also anticipated to visit Islamabad and New Delhi. The restoration of dialogue under Joe Biden with Taliban is an indication that the US plans to continue its Afghan policy similar to Donald Trump’s administration.

India, which has finished a few developmental projects in Afghanistan will be watching this US move closely.

Pakistan is giving a complete support to Taliban and wants to install in Kabul, which can be a key threat to efforts taken by India in building democratic and development institutions. India’s stance is clear about any government which is to be formed in Kabul should be Afghan led and Afghan owned.
