A Comeback Story:
Initially, Nikhil Kumaraswamy led during the first six rounds of counting. However, once the EVMs from Channapatna city were opened, Yogeshwar gained a significant lead, which he maintained until the end, ensuring his win.
Why Did Yogeshwar Win?
- Sympathy Factor: Yogeshwar benefited from voters’ empathy after two consecutive defeats. Additionally, there was discontent among voters over Kumaraswamy’s lack of attention to the constituency despite serving as MLA twice.
- Congress’s Push: Following the Lok Sabha defeat in Bengaluru Rural, the DK brothers (DK Shivakumar and DK Suresh) took the Channapatna by-election as a matter of prestige, with Shivakumar starting public outreach campaigns four months before the election.
- Minority Votes: Yogeshwar managed to gain a large share of the minority votes, which had previously eluded him.
- Perception of Service: Known as the “modern Bhagiratha,” Yogeshwar’s image as the leader who helped fill the Channapatna lake resonated strongly with the voters.
