Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday declared on Tuesday about providing free ration to the ration cart holders for the upcoming 2 months along with a sum of Rs. 5,000 for the auto-rickshaw drivers and taxi drivers throughout Delhi.
Kejriwal said, “We have decided that all ration card holders in Delhi, around 72 lakh in number, will be given free ration for the next two months.” He further mentioned that the lockdown may not be extended for the couple of months and the initiative is solely with the intent of providing some financial help to the poor.
He further added, “Imposition of the lockdown was necessary to curb the spread of the virus and to break the COVID-19 chain. But a lockdown can create great financial difficulties for the underprivileged sections, especially the daily wage labourers.”
Earlier, last week, the Delhi government stated about disbursing the ex-gratia payments of Rs 5,000 each to construction workers who had registered themselves with the Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. Kejriwal further added that the Delhi government had provided assistance to 1, 56,000 auto rickshaw and taxi drivers. He further appealed the people and the political parties to help each other without bringing any politics. He added, “If we all fight together, I hope that soon we will win the fight against coronavirus.”
On Monday, Delhi recorded a count of 18,043 fresh cases of Covid-19 and 448 deaths related to the deadly virus, as reported by Delhi’s daily health bulletin.
