The Delhi Police used the tear gas shells to diffuse away a group of farmers who were protesting on Singhu border on Friday as a part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to protest against the Centre’s recently approved farm laws, according to a senior police officer said.

The shells were shot along the border which is connecting Delhi to Haryana. The police officer said, “We are using tear gas to disperse protesting farmers. We are also informing them that in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, any kind of rally and dharna is not allowed.”

The officer further added, “They have been denied permission and legal action will be taken against them if they still try to enter Delhi.”

The border has increased security and water canons have been placed. Also, barbed wire has been lashed at the fencing to curb the protesters from entering the city. Farmers have gathered along the borders in tractor-trolleys with ration and essentials for their march. Authorities have announced Section 144 in parts of the state to stop the protesters.

The farmers in Punjab have urged revoking the farm laws, which as per their demand, would be replaced with other legislations framed after joint discussion with stakeholders.
