India had held a flight test for Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) on Monday from Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast which turned out to be successful.
The Press Information Bureau released an official statement which stated that all the mission objectives were accomplished which comprises of the range and altitude, separating the nose cone, the releasing of Torpedo and deploying Velocity Reduction Mechanism.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) by tweeting, “The DRDO has successfully flight tested the Supersonic Missile assisted release of Torpedo, SMART. This will be a major technology breakthrough for stand-off capability in anti-submarine warfare. I congratulate DRDO and other stakeholders for this significant achievement.”
DRDO chairman, Dr G Satheesh Reddy termed SMART as a ‘game-changer’ technology demonstration for the anti-submarine warfare.
Specifically catering to anti-submarine warfare operations which would extend beyond the torpedo range, SMART backs up missile assisted release of lightweight Anti-submarine Torpedo System.
