Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called High Commissioner from Canada on Friday and stated about the comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau along with Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament over farmers protest in India and iterated the protest will have “seriously damaging impact on ties between India and Canada.”

In an official statement, MEA said, “The Canadian High Commissioner was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs today and informed the comments by the Canadian Prime Minister, some Cabinet ministers and Members of Parliament on issues relating to Indian farmers constitute an unacceptable interference in our internal affairs.”

The statement further stated, “These comments have encouraged gatherings of extremist activities in front of our High Commission and Consulates in Canada that raise issues of safety and security. We expect the Canadian Government to ensure the fullest security of Indian diplomatic personnel and its political leaders to refrain from pronouncements that legitimize extremist activism.”

Earlier, this week on Monday, on the occasion of 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada will always be there to defend the right of peaceful protest.

To which, Indian spokesperson from MEA said to the media, “We have seen some ill-formed comments by Canadian leaders relating to farmers in India. Such comments are unwarranted, especially when pertaining to the internal affairs of a democratic country. It also best that diplomatic conversations are not misrepresented for political purposes.”
