The Supreme Court on Monday will be having a petition regarding an appeal for removal of the protesting farmers along the borders of New Delhi demanding to revoke the three controversial farm laws. According to the details on the website of Supreme Court, the plea filed by a law student Rishabh Sharma citing the difficulty the protest is causing to the regular commuters will be heard by a bench comprising of Chief Justice S A Bobde, Justice A S Bopanna and Justice V Ramasubramaniam.

Rishabh further mentioned that the crowd gathering might increase in number of Covid-19 cases. His petition also cites about how the farmers had refused the offer of peaceful protests at Nirankari ground in Burari. He has also added that the farmers can protest peacefully once the pandemic is over.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting along the borders of New Delhi appealing for revoking the laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 which were passed on September. Though the government has proposed some amendments, farmers are stubborn on revoking the laws and are also for a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) for procurement of crops.

The government and the farmers leaders have had several rounds of talks to resolve the issue but it has been inconclusive. The next round of talks will be scheduled for January 15.
