Ramanagara:In the Channapatna by-election, CP Yogeshwar secured a decisive victory. Despite switching from the BJP to the Congress at the last moment, the voters stood firmly by Yogeshwar.

A Comeback Story:
Initially, Nikhil Kumaraswamy led during the first six rounds of counting. However, once the EVMs from Channapatna city were opened, Yogeshwar gained a significant lead, which he maintained until the end, ensuring his win.

Why Did Yogeshwar Win?

  1. Sympathy Factor: Yogeshwar benefited from voters’ empathy after two consecutive defeats. Additionally, there was discontent among voters over Kumaraswamy’s lack of attention to the constituency despite serving as MLA twice.
  2. Congress’s Push: Following the Lok Sabha defeat in Bengaluru Rural, the DK brothers (DK Shivakumar and DK Suresh) took the Channapatna by-election as a matter of prestige, with Shivakumar starting public outreach campaigns four months before the election.
  3. Minority Votes: Yogeshwar managed to gain a large share of the minority votes, which had previously eluded him.
  4. Perception of Service: Known as the “modern Bhagiratha,” Yogeshwar’s image as the leader who helped fill the Channapatna lake resonated strongly with the voters.

While some anticipated Congress minister Zameer Ahmed Khan’s statements might harm the party, they ultimately did not significantly impact the results. Yogeshwar’s focus on developmental work and his local connection played a pivotal role in his victory.
